The short answer

Pick a coil by three things: the series your device takes (coils only fit their own series), the resistance that matches how you vape (0.8 ohm and up for tight MTL with nic salts, below 0.5 ohm for airy DTL with high-VG juice), and mesh for the best flavor. Change it every one to two weeks, or as soon as the flavor fades or tastes burnt.

The coil is the small, cheap part that decides how your vape tastes. Choose the right one and every flavor shines; choose the wrong one and even a great juice falls flat. Here’s how to get it right.

1. Find the right series for your device

Coils aren’t universal. A Caliburn G coil fits Caliburn G-series pods, a GTi coil fits the Vaporesso iTank T, and a Z coil fits Geekvape Z tanks. Check the name printed on your current coil or device box, then shop that series in Replacement Coils. Some pods have the coil built in, so you replace the whole pod instead; those are in Replacement Pods.

2. Choose the resistance (ohms)

Resistance Style Wattage Best juice Examples
0.8 ohm and up MTL, tight draw Low Nic salts Caliburn G, SMOK Nord
About 0.5–0.8 ohm Restricted DL Medium Either, lower-strength salts SMOK RPM 2
Below 0.5 ohm DTL, sub-ohm High High-VG freebase Geekvape Z, Vaporesso GTi

Lower resistance draws more power, makes more vapor and uses more juice. Higher resistance runs cooler with a tighter draw. Our MTL vs DTL guide explains which style suits you, and nic salt vs freebase covers the juice side.

3. Mesh or regular wire?

Mesh coils use a flat, perforated strip instead of a wound wire. They heat more evenly, give richer flavor and tend to last longer, which is why most modern coils are mesh. Traditional wire coils still work well for MTL and are often cheaper.

How to prime a new coil

  1. Drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton through the side holes and down the center.
  2. Install the coil and fill the tank or pod.
  3. Wait 5 to 10 minutes so the cotton soaks through.
  4. Take a few puffs at the low end of the coil’s wattage range, then work up.

Skipping this is the number one cause of a burnt taste on a new coil.

How often should you change your coil?

For most daily vapers, every one to two weeks. Change it sooner if you notice any of these:

  • Flavor that’s muted or “off”
  • A burnt or harsh taste that doesn’t go away after soaking
  • Less vapor than usual
  • Gurgling or leaking that re-seating the coil doesn’t fix

Sweet dessert and candy juices, high wattage and heavy use all shorten coil life. Keeping a spare pack on hand means you’re never stuck with a bad one.

Make your coils last longer

  • Prime every new coil properly
  • Stay inside the wattage range printed on the coil
  • Keep the tank topped up and avoid chain vaping
  • Alternate very sweet flavors with lighter ones

Vape coil FAQs

How long does a vape coil last?

Usually one to two weeks with daily use. Very sweet juice can cut that to a few days.

Will any coil fit my tank?

No. Coils only fit their own series. Check the name on your current coil or your device’s box.

Are mesh coils better?

For most people, yes: better flavor, more even heating and longer life.

Can I clean and reuse a coil?

Rinsing rarely brings a worn coil back. Since coils are inexpensive, replacing them gives better results.
