The short answer

A burnt taste almost always means the cotton inside your coil is dry or worn out. Either the coil is getting more heat than the e-liquid can keep up with, or it has simply reached the end of its life. Top up the juice, lower the wattage and give the coil a few minutes to soak. If it still tastes burnt, replace the coil or pod.

There’s nothing worse than pulling on your vape and getting a mouthful of something that tastes like a campfire. The good news: a burnt hit is one of the easiest vaping problems to diagnose. Work through the seven causes below, roughly from most to least common, and you’ll usually find the culprit in a couple of minutes.

1. The coil is new and wasn’t primed

A brand-new coil has dry cotton. Fire it before the cotton is soaked and you scorch it on the very first puff, and a scorched wick never fully recovers.

Fix: drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton through the coil’s side holes and down the center, install it, fill the tank or pod, and wait 5 to 10 minutes before vaping. Start at the low end of the coil’s wattage range for the first few puffs. Our coil guide has the full priming routine.

2. You’re chain vaping

Every puff pulls juice out of the wick. Take puffs back to back and the cotton can’t re-soak fast enough, so the coil heats a half-dry wick.

Fix: leave a few seconds between puffs. If you like long sessions, a device with more airflow and a mesh coil, or a slightly lower wattage, keeps up better.

3. The wattage is too high for the coil

Every coil has a recommended wattage range printed on the coil or the box. Run it above that range and it vaporizes juice faster than the cotton can deliver it.

Fix: drop the wattage into the printed range, ideally in the lower half. On a pod with power levels, step down one level.

4. The tank or pod is running low

When the juice drops below the wicking holes, the cotton stops getting fed. This is the classic “it was fine a minute ago” burnt hit.

Fix: keep the tank at least a quarter full, and refill before it gets close to the coil. Tilt the device gently after refilling so the juice reaches the wick.

5. Your e-liquid is too thick for the coil

High-VG juice (like a 70/30 blend) is thick. In a tight, high-resistance pod coil it can wick too slowly, and the coil runs dry even though the pod is full.

Fix: match the juice to the hardware. Small mouth-to-lung pods suit nic salts and thinner blends, while 70% VG juice like our house e-liquids belongs in sub-ohm tanks and mesh coils. Not sure which style you vape? Read MTL vs DTL.

6. Sweet e-liquid has gunked the coil

Sweetener doesn’t fully vaporize. It caramelizes on the coil, and over a few days that crust turns your flavor dull and then burnt. Dessert and candy flavors do this fastest.

Fix: expect shorter coil life with very sweet juice, and swap coils as soon as the flavor turns. Alternating with a lighter fruit or menthol helps.

7. The coil has simply worn out

Coils are consumables. Most last one to two weeks with daily use, sometimes less. Once the cotton is charred, no amount of soaking brings it back.

Fix: replace it. Shop replacement coils by brand, or if your device uses pods with a built-in coil, grab fresh replacement pods.

Burnt taste in a disposable vape?

Disposables have a coil and wick inside too. A burnt taste usually means the e-liquid is almost used up, and it won’t come back. Taking shorter, gentler puffs can stretch the last of it, but it’s time for a new one. If you go through disposables quickly, a refillable pod system lets you replace just the coil or pod instead of the whole device.

What you notice Most likely cause Fix
Burnt from the very first puff New coil not primed Replace, then prime properly this time
Fine, then burnt mid-session Chain vaping or low juice Pause between puffs; refill
Burnt on high power only Wattage above coil range Lower the wattage
Slowly duller, then burnt Sweetener build-up or old coil Replace the coil or pod
Burnt in a tight pod with thick juice Juice too high in VG Switch to nic salts or a thinner blend

Burnt vape FAQs

Can I fix a burnt coil?

Not really. Once the cotton has charred, the taste stays. You can sometimes rescue a coil that’s only slightly dry by letting it soak, but a truly burnt coil needs replacing.

How long should a vape coil last?

Usually one to two weeks of daily use. Sweet e-liquid, high wattage and heavy use shorten that. See our guide to picking and changing coils.

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

It almost certainly wasn’t primed, or it was fired at too high a wattage before the cotton was fully soaked.

Is it bad to keep vaping a burnt coil?

It tastes harsh and unpleasant, and the coil isn’t working as designed. Replace it rather than vaping through it.
