The short answer

Nic salts use a salt form of nicotine that is smoother at high strengths, so they suit small, low-wattage pod systems and a tight MTL draw. Freebase is the traditional form, harsher at high strength, so it is used at low strengths in high-wattage sub-ohm tanks with big clouds. Pick by your device: pods take salts, sub-ohm tanks take freebase.

Two bottles, both labeled “e-liquid,” both with nicotine, yet they’re made for completely different devices. Use the wrong one and you’ll either get a hit that’s far too harsh or one that leaves you unsatisfied. Here’s how they differ.

What is freebase nicotine?

Freebase is the original form of nicotine used in e-liquid. At low strengths it’s smooth, but as the strength goes up the throat hit gets harsh quickly. That’s why freebase is usually sold at low strengths (typically 0 to 12mg) and vaped in sub-ohm tanks at higher wattage, where you inhale a lot of vapor per puff.

What is nic salt?

Nicotine salt is nicotine combined with a mild acid (benzoic acid is common). This lowers the pH, which makes the vapor much smoother at high strength. That smoothness is the whole point: nic salts can be sold at much higher strengths than freebase without the harshness, and they’re designed for small, low-power pod systems.

Nic salt Freebase
Typical strengths Higher (often 20–50mg) Lower (often 0–12mg)
Throat hit Smooth at high strength Harsh at high strength
Device Pod systems, MTL Sub-ohm tanks, mods, DTL
Wattage Low Higher
Clouds Small Large
Juice use Slow Fast
Typical blend Higher PG High VG (e.g. 70/30)

Which should you choose?

Choose nic salts if…

  • You use a pod system like the Caliburn G5 Lite or XROS 5
  • You like a tight, cigarette-like draw (MTL)
  • You want a discreet setup that doesn’t make big clouds

Popular picks: Pod Monster White Peach Razz, Sadboy Strawberry Cheesecake and Better Salt Clear Ice. See every flavor in Nic Salts.

Choose freebase if…

  • You use a sub-ohm tank or a pod mod at higher wattage
  • You like a deep, airy draw and big clouds (DTL)
  • You want the widest flavor range at low nicotine

Don’t mix them up

A high-strength nic salt in a sub-ohm tank delivers far too much nicotine per puff. A thick, high-VG freebase in a tight pod coil wicks too slowly and can give you a burnt taste. Match the juice to the device and both work beautifully. Not sure which style you vape? Read MTL vs DTL.

Nic salt vs freebase FAQs

Are nic salts stronger than freebase?

They’re usually sold at higher strengths, and they’re smoother at those strengths, so they deliver more nicotine per puff. At the same strength, salts simply feel smoother.

Can I put nic salts in a sub-ohm tank?

It’s not recommended. At sub-ohm wattage the nicotine hit becomes far too strong.

Can I put freebase in a pod system?

Low-strength freebase works in some pods, especially higher-PG blends. Thick 70% VG juice can struggle in tight pod coils.

What’s in e-liquid, anyway?

Four things: PG, VG, flavoring and nicotine. Our post on what is in vape juice explains each one.

Our products contain nicotine and are for adults 21 and over only. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
